Singing His Praises

Unsung nationally, perhaps, but Frank McCulloch remains a legend among those on the West Coast who worked with him, learned from him, sought his guidance and yearned for his approval ("Unsung Hero," June/July 2004).

He was a helluva guy, a great editor and a wonderful boss. One day at the San Francisco Examiner he chuckled at the notion that he had reached a certain state of grace as a gray eminence and, typically modest, protested the substitute: bald sage.

Other than that hair issue, I want to grow up to be just like Frank.
