Hanging Tough

Beth Macy's "Hunkering Down" (June/July) is a beautiful piece on journalism. I thought she did a fantastic job of bringing together the past, present and future of the industry.

My husband is a journalist and was laid off in December 2008 from a newspaper. We were so discouraged with his paper, the industry, corporate owners, etc. You would think he would have shrugged his shoulders and found a different path. But he just loves his job too much. Three short months after getting laid off, he was hired at a paper in a neighboring town. We've seen the worst and we made it through. We're very hopeful for the future and I thought your article gave us reason to be hopeful. So, thank you for helping us have something to hang our hope on.

Thank you, Beth Macy, for your wonderful story. You really captured our worries, determination and commitment! I was alerted to your piece by a link posted by a friend on Facebook — how's that for "convergence!"
